Storage guidance

Things to consider when using storage

  • Opening times: Some storage units have limited opening hours which can make it difficult for the moving company to complete your move, move you out of storage at the desired time, and limit the times you can visit and take items out.

  • Security: Storage providers have different levels of security, ranging from wooden fencing to CCTV and coded gate systems. The level of security you require will depend on the value of the items you are storing.

  • Insurance: Many storage providers will offer you insurance as an optional extra. You can also purchase storage insurance independently. It is worth considering that most storage insurance policies do not cover damage resulting from issues such as mould, mildew, vermin and moths. This makes it even more crucial that belongings are stored and packed correctly to reduce the risk to your furniture and personal effects.

  • Access: It is easier for removal teams to transport belongings and furniture into drive up storage containers. These types of storage units increase the speed of your move and reduces the risk of damages to your belongings as they will be handled less and not need to be lifted through narrow storage entrances.

Fabrics

Fabric is the perfect breading ground for mould and mildew. It is essential that all fabric items are fully cleaned and dry. We suggest that fabrics are packed in air tight plastic containers to reduce the risk of moisture and mould.

Art work

When we pack your art work, we will be ensuring they are safe for transport. We will use materials such as glassine paper, bubble wrap and cardboard. However, this packaging is not suitable for storage conditions. If your art work is going to be stored for more than a few weeks we recommend that customers remove our packing material from their art work and cover paintings with fabric sheets.

Long term storage

Your removal team will place your belongings on the floor of the storage unit you have booked. This can be problematic if belongings are going to be in storage long term, due to the higher risk of moisture and mould from items resting on the cold floor. If you would like to reduce this risk by providing blankets or wooden crates to lift your belongings off the floor, please leave them at the unit and let the removal team know.
